No matter the reason, every home can smell a little funky from time to time. Here’s how you can make your home smell more pleasant in a pinch.

Method 1 of 3: Eliminate Existing Odors
1. Determine the source of the odor. In some cases it may be obvious, but if you aren’t sure, check around your home to see if you can find where it is coming from. Common problem areas may be: closets, pet areas, trash, cabinets, refrigerator, kitchen sink, laundry room.
2. Remove odor sources.
If you find the odor source (rotting trash, pet waste, etc.) remove it from your home and dispose of it properly.
3. Get some fresh air.
If possible, open any windows or doors that have screens so that air can circulate.
4. Clean carpet with baking soda.
Sprinkle baking soda on your carpet and let it sit as long as possible to soak up odors before vacuuming. Fifteen minutes is good if you don’t have a lot of time.
5. Get rid of cigarette odor.
Place bowls of white vinegar or ammonia around your home to get rid of cigarette smoke odor.

Method 2 of 3: Create a More Pleasant Scent
1. Light a scented candle or use a scented oil burner if you have one available.
2.  Use plug-in or stand alone air fresheners.
3. Try placing satchels of dried lavender or cinnamon sticks around your home for a more natural aroma.
4. Bake a batch of cookies. To create a pleasant scent quickly you can use prepackaged dough.
5. Simmer herbs and spices on the stove. Fill a pot part way with water and bring to a boil. Add pleasant smelling herbs and spices like cinnamon and cloves. Reduce heat to low and allow to simmer.

Method 3 of 3: Treat Pet Stains and Odor
1. Use newspaper and paper towels to soak up any fresh urine. Once paper is saturated, replace with new paper and repeat process until no more liquid is able to be extracted.
2. Rinse the area with fresh cool water.
3. Remove excess water by blotting again with paper or using a wet vacuum if you have one available.
4. Eliminate set-in stains. Clean soiled areas with a wet vacuum if one is available. Try a pet odor neutralizer or carpet cleaner.

Tips
Do not over-do it when creating pleasant scents. Try to stick with one or two methods at a time. These tips may eliminate or mask odors quickly, but additional steps may need to be taken to permanently remove odors from your home.

Warnings
Use caution with scented candles and oil burners. Never leave them unattended, especially around pets and children.  Stubborn smells that do not go away may indicate a more serious problem. If odors persist you should have your home inspected to rule out any dangerous mold or decay issues. Check labels to make sure cleaning products are safe for pets and children if you have them.
